Please find the official announcement here - including an explanation of the availability zones. Microsoft has made a huge investment in Switzerland and added new, physically separate data centres in the greater Zurich area. To protect against single data centre failures, the new locations/zones provide independent power, cooling, fire protection and networking infrastructure. Use cases include high-availability workloads with the highest demand for resiliency and availability, as well as applications requiring low latency due to the round-trip of less than 2 milliseconds between availability zones.
With Azure, Microsoft 365, including MS-Teams, Dynamics 365 and Power Platform in Swiss data centers, large enterprises, SMEs, ISVs and start-ups as well as the public sector are able to use a secure and highly available cloud infrastructure within the Swiss national borders. The cloud Microsoft in Switzerland is the only local hyperscale cloud that offers such a wide range of integrated services with many underlying synergies. Microsoft started with less than 50 locally available Azure services in August 2019 and they are now up to more than 200. An overview can be found at: https://aka.ms/Azure -Switzerland Another unique differentiator is the local configuration with the geo-redundant Western Switzerland region. It offers regulated customers an additional Swiss data residency option with disaster recovery in the country about 200 km from the greater Zurich area.
