Teams Direct Routing Media Bypass

Telephony and VoiceBlog Post

Good news for fans of Microsoft Teams who are considering using the tool’s Voice PSTN communications: the Media Bypass is now available for direct routing with Microsoft Teams.

A quick reminder about the direct routing : The “Direct Routing” feature lets you connect your own SBC PSTN and your own provider to Microsoft Teams for users’ phone numbers.

The Media Bypass allows you to shorten the media path so that it connects directly between the end user and the SBC, instead of routing it through the Microsoft Phone System. For the Media Bypass this to work, the SBC and the client Teams must be able to connect directly to each other. If the media cannot route directly, they will transparently fall back to routing via Cloud Microsoft (media proxy in Azure).

Would you like to see the technical differences between MicrosoftTeams and Microsoft Teams Direct Routing ?

Ask for the comparison

How does the Teams client behavewithout Media Bypass ?

Without Media Bypass, when a Teams customer using direct routing makes or receives a call PSTN (Sunrise, UPC, Swisscom, etc.), the signaling and media flow between the SBC, the cloud Microsoft (Microsoft uses the datacenter closest to the SBC) and the Teams client, as shown in the following diagram:

This means that the media connects to the Internet, which can be a sub-optimal network route and will certainly result in additional hops.

In this case, the media goes directly to SBC, which may be located on the same site or on the same private network as the user of Teams.

The Media Bypass uses protocols called ICE (Interactive Connectivity Establishment) on the Teams client and ICE Light on SBC.

Media streams pass through the public IP address of the SBC

It is important to understand that, in the media bypass scenario, the client Teams must have routable access to the public IP address of the SBC, even from an internal network.

This scenario is not common on most enterprise firewalls, so some modifications may be necessary.

As a reminder, the only SBC certified for the Direct Routing Media Bypass are AudioCodes and Ribbon (Sonus), as well as Anynode and Oracle.

What an article Can't Know

An article describes what applies to everyone. What varies from one organization to another is the inventory: which applications, which accounts, and which pieces of equipment are actually involved in your organization. The inventory determines the scope of the effort, and it cannot be summarized on a single page.

You'll be speaking directly with the engineers who will be doing the work, not with a middleman. We'll respond within 24 business hours.
