About modern authentication
Modern Auth entication is a Microsoft generic term for a combination of more secure authentication and authorisation methods between a client (e.g. PC or phone) and a server, as well as some security measures that rely on access policies. It includes:
- Authentication methods: multi-factor authentication (MFA); smart card authentication; client certificate authentication
- Authorisation methods: Microsoft's implementation of Open Authorization (OAuth)
- Conditional access strategies: mobile application management (MAM) and Conditional Access of Azure Active Directory
Modern authentication is enabled by default in Exchange Online, Microsoft Teams, Skype for Business Online and SharePoint Online for new tenants. For tenants created before August 1, 2017, modern authentication is disabled by default for Exchange Online and Skype for Business Online.
Modern authentication with Teams Rooms Systems
When using modern authentication with the Microsoft Teams Rooms application, the Active Directory authentication library (ADAL) and OAuth 2.0 are used to connect to Microsoft Teams, Exchange and Skype for Business.
Support for modern authentication is available in MTR version 4.4.25.0 which will be rolled out to all customers later this month. Release notes here
Microsoft Teams Rooms are shared devices. They perform a nightly reboot themselves to ensure proper operation and to obtain critical operating system, driver, firmware or application updates.
Therefore, Microsoft Teams Rooms resource accounts should not be configured to use multi-factor authentication (MFA), smart card authentication, or client certificate-based authentication (all of which are available to end users).
The modern authentication mechanism uses the resource owner's type of password authorisation in OAuth 2.0, which requires no user intervention.
