Dynamics 365 Sales: How Agents Are Changing the Work of Salespeople
Dynamics 365 Sales' 2026 Wave 1 is built around agents. Sales Qualification Agent, Sales Opportunity Agent, Opportunity Research Agent, Sales Research Agent: the release plan includes several of these, at different stages of delivery, and they cover tasks that salespeople used to do manually or didn't do at all.
The term deserves a definition, because it refers to organizing work around the tool rather than configuring it. An agent processes records and produces an output—an assessment, a summary, a recommendation—without needing to be asked a question, unlike a conversational assistant.
What Microsoft Has Delivered, and What's Still on the Horizon
The release schedule distinguishes between the public preview and general availability, and the gap between the two is often measured in months. Here are the milestones, as noted on August 27, 2026, in the release schedule Dynamics 365 Sales, Wave 1 of 2026.
| Capacity | Preview | General Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Opportunity Research Agent — Risks and Indicators for a Deal | October 31, 2025 | April 15, 2026 |
| Sales Research Agent — Insights into Sales Operations | February 16, 2026 | April 30, 2026 |
| Data from the Fabric Lakehouse in Business Intelligence | February 16, 2026 | April 30, 2026 |
| Dynamics 365 -Sales Skills in Microsoft 365 Copilot Cowork | May 5, 2026 | June 15, 2026 |
| Natural-language search and sorting in the grid | March 21, 2025 | April 30, 2026 |
| Copy an opportunity for a recurring deal | June 25, 2026 | August 6, 2026 |
| Creation of Records by the Sales Agent | April 15, 2026 | September 2026 |
| Multiple Sales Qualification Agents in the Same Environment | August 2026 | September 2026 |
Dates in italics are announced, not released: the plan does not yet have a checkmark next to it indicating release. Microsoft itself notes that timelines are subject to change and that an announced feature may not be released.
Sales Qualification Agent, Sales Opportunity Agent, Sales Research Agent: prospects, open deals, portfolio
The Sales Qualification Agent works with prospects. They evaluate them, prepare introductory emails, and suggest recommended actions. Four features that the plan specifically assigns to this agent do not have a delivery checkmark: the personalization of generated emails, the prioritization of leads based on recommended actions, the identification of the best leads from any data source, and the deployment of multiple agents in the same environment —the latter is scheduled for a preview release in August 2026 and general availability in September 2026. This would change the nature of the deployment: an organization with two distinct business areas would no longer have to fit its two qualification logic models into a single configuration.
The Sales Opportunity Agent works on ongoing deals. It provides guidance at every stage of the sales cycle. Microsoft has announced that, starting in July 2026—both in preview and general availability—the guidance will focus primarily on what has changed since the last view rather than on the entire record, which remains viewable in full. Our take: this is a usability issue that hinders adoption; a comprehensive summary displayed every time the file is opened ends up being skimmed rather than read.
The Sales Research Agent works on the portfolio. Since April 30, 2026, sales research experiments have been able to draw on data from a Fabric lakehouse in addition to Dataverse, and research is no longer limited to the contents of the CRM : an organization that has already invested in its data platform does not have to copy that data into Dynamics 365. Agent-driven portfolio planning is scheduled for preview in July 2026 and general availability in August 2026.
The quality of the data entered determines what the agents produce
These agents initially process data from Dynamics 365. Since April 30, 2026, sales research experiments have also been querying a Fabric lakehouse alongside Dataverse ; the ability to identify prospects from any data source has been announced for the Sales Qualification Agent, though it has not yet been released. An agent summarizing an opportunity reproduces the contents of the record; it does not guess what the sales representative did not enter.
That is why several of the features already released in 2026 are not agents, but functions that speed up data entry: the form-filling assistance bar and smart paste, generally available since April 30, 2026, and the opportunity copy feature for recurring deals, available since August 6, 2026. Microsoft has also announced that, starting in July 2026, opportunity data will be enriched with meeting intelligence. These features determine whether agents have work to do.
The deployment order follows from this: start with what improves data quality, then activate the agents that rely on that data. Doing the opposite results in plausible recommendations based on empty fields—and a sales team that quickly stops consulting them.
Four Things to Check Before Activating an Agent
Most of these capabilities are labeled “Users by administrators, creators, or analysts”: they must be enabled; they do not activate on their own. A small number are enabled automatically upon general availability—this is the case for the “ Dynamics 365 Sales” capabilities in Microsoft 365 Copilot Cowork and opportunity copying: check the label for each feature before setting a deployment schedule.
Four questions to address before activation:
- Which fields are actually filled out for opportunities and leads from the past twelve months? The answer indicates how much the agents will be able to produce.
- Who approves what an agent proposes, and at what point in the process? An agent without human oversight merely shifts the risk rather than eliminating it.
- What data falls outside the scope when an agent relies on external sources or on Microsoft 365 ? This is a question that arises with any integration.
- Which licenses cover the target audience? Check each capacity on the licenses page at Dynamics 365 Sales before estimating a cost.
These trade-offs between data, processes, and adoption are typical of a classic “ CRM ” project; our page “Dynamics 365 Sales” describes the context in which they arise.

What an article Can't Know
An article describes what applies to everyone. What varies from one organization to another is the inventory: which applications, which accounts, and which pieces of equipment are actually involved in your organization. The inventory determines the scope of the effort, and it cannot be summarized on a single page.
You'll be speaking directly with the engineers who will be doing the work, not with a middleman. We'll respond within 24 business hours.
